Intensive: Improvised Science Fiction
or: How to become an expert on any improvised genre

Have you ever worked on a longer improvised genre piece? If you have, you probably experienced how difficult it is to nail the genre while still avoiding stereotypes. Or to go beyond just replaying  scenes from movies you’ve seen

Katy Schutte and Chris Mead from London are Project2… and THE experts on improvised science fiction. Their passion for this genre has not only brought them together, but has also led them to travel the stages around the world. They are famous for nailing the genre with precision, lots of humor, perfect teamwork and exquisite storytelling.

Katy  Chris Mead2

In this workshop they will  teach you how to improvise a full evening Science Fiction play, and  will also work with you on all the improvisation skills you need to create your own improvised genre-show. You don’t want to do genre? No problem. These skills will improve your scene work in all kinds of shows!

Katy and Chris explore genre through four areas: SPACE, TIME, HUMANS & FORM:

You will explore the places and settings of the genre and see how they can inform the characters that play within them. You will think about how genres deal with time. Not only SciFi with its time and place travelling offers creative ways of storytelling. Flashbacks, possible futures and older and younger versions of characters let you use time in a nonlinear way – and you will learn to still  keep your timeline consistent.

Your characters will be playing in the world of ordinary & extraordinary, where elves, robots, mermaids, lamps, dogs and cheetos can all have a point of view. Katy and Chris will help you find ways of keeping emotional depth, honest reactions and relatability in play.

And beyond all that, they will help you to use your passions to find your own way of approaching a genre. What is it about a genre, style or group of players that makes you so excited about impro? How can you turn this excitement into your own unique show? Because in the end, it is not about imitation, it is about making it yours…
